Cryoinstant se compose de 25 billes poreuses dans un flacon rempli d'un bouillon contenant du glycérol. Les microorganismes se collent sur la surface poreuse des billes. L'excès de bouillon est aspiré, les flacons peuvent ensuite être stockés jusqu'à –70 °C dans un congélateur.
