Nuclear factor κ B (NF-κB) is a ubiquitous and an essential mediator of gene expression during activation of immune and inflammatory responses. NF-κB mediates the expression of a great variety of genes in response to extracellular stimuli. NF-κB is associated with IkappaB proteins in the cell cytoplasm, which inhibit NF-κB activity. IkappaB is phosphorylated by IkappaB kinase (IKK) complex that contains IKKalpha, IKKbeta, and IKKgamma. A molecule in the IKK complex was identified and designated IKKepsilon/IKK-iota.

Xestonspongin C is a structurally novel marine alkaloid isolated from the Okinawan sponge Xestospongia sp. It is a potent, cell-permeable inhibitor of IP3 receptor-mediated Ca2+ release (IC50 = 358 nM). However, since xestospongin C also inhibits voltage-dependent Ca2+ and K+ currents at concentrations similar to those which inhibit the IP3 receptor, it can only be regarded as a selective blocker of the IP3 receptor in permeabilized cells and not in cells with intact plasma membranes. Corynebacterium diphtheriae is a Gram-positive, non-motile bacterium that can cause serious illness in unvaccinated humans. C. diphteriae infects the epithelial cells of the upper respiratory tract, which then secrete a potent toxin absorbed and disseminated through lymph channels and blood to the susceptible tissues of the body. The toxin is a single protein chain of 62kDa which is "nicked" at proteolytic processing sites to produce an A chain of 21kDa and a B chain of 40kDa, held together by a disulfide bridge. The A-chain carries the ADP-ribosylation enzymatic activity responsible for the toxic action.

Surfactant protein A (SP-A) is synthesized and secreted by lung epithelial cells. It belongs to group III of the family of C-type lectins, members of which possess an overall structure consisting of multiple globular head regions linked by triple-helical, collagen-like, strands. This group also includes SP-D, and the serum proteins mannan-binding protein, conglutinin, and collectin-43, all of which bind to the C1q receptor found on a wide variety of cells. Both SP-D and SP-A enhance oxygen radical production by alveolar macrophages. The serum concentration is 45 ng/mL in healthy individuals.

Microcystins are a group of cyclic heptapeptide hepatotoxins produced by a number of cyanobacterial genera. The most notable of which, and namesake, is the widespread genus Microcystis. Structurally, all microcystins consist of the generalized structure cyclo(-D-Ala1-X2-D-MeAsp3-Y4-Adda5-D-Glu6-Mdha7-). X and Y are variable L-amino acids, D-MeAsp is D-erythro-ß-methylaspartic acid and Mdha is N-methyldehydroalanine. Adda is the cyanobacteria unique C20 ß-amino acid 3-amino-9-methoxy-2,6,8-trimethyl-10-phenyl-deca-4,6-dienoic acid. Substitutions of the variable L-amino acids at positions 2 and 4 give rise to at least 21 known primary microcystin analogs and alterations in the other constituent amino acids result in more than 90 reported mycrocystins to date.
