In this experiment, students see a blue colour change in transformed cells due to the switching on of a gene. Oil spills cause devastation to the environment, killing sea life, birds, and coastal plants. Spraying areas of contamination with oil-eating microbes accelerates the degradation of the oil. This process is known as bioremediation. In this open-ended experiment, students grow a mixture of oil-eating bacteria and observe their effectiveness at degrading a variety of oils.

Die auf der Zelloberfläche präsenten Proteinkombinationen sind bei Krebszellen anders als bei gesunden Zellen. Antikörper gegen diese Proteine binden sich speziell an Krebszellen, nicht an gesunde Zellen. Dies ermöglicht eine frühzeitige Krebserkennung und stellt potentiell einen Verabreichungsweg für Krebstherapien dar. In diesem Simulationsexperiment wird die Reaktion der Krebszellen-Marker und ihrer entsprechenden Antigene demonstriert.

In Kultur gezüchtete gesunde Zellen stellen ihr Wachstum ein, wenn die Zelldichte zu hoch wird (Kontakthemmung). Krebszellen in Kultur hingegen vermehren sich unkontrolliert weiter, weil ihnen diese Hemmung fehlt. Dieser Umstand begünstigt die Tumorbildung im Körper. Darüber hinaus können in einem einzigen Tumor viele verschiedene Zelltypen vorhanden sein. Dieses Experiment vermittelt Studenten einen Einblick in die Unterschiede zwischen gesunden Zellen und Krebszellen sowohl im Hinblick auf deren Wachstum als auch auf die vorhandenen Zelltypen.
