Listeria-Infektionen (Listeriose) können zu einer milden Gastroenteritis bis hin zu schweren Fällen von Sepsis, Meningitis, Enzephalitis sowie zu Fehlgeburten führen. Aufgrund der ubiquitären Verteilung von Listeria und ihrer Fähigkeit, sich auch bei Kühlschranktemperaturen (2 bis 8 °C) zu vermehren, bilden Lebensmittel eine der wichtigsten Infektionsquellen. Listerien sind eine Gattung von Gram-positiven, nicht sporenbildenden, stabförmigen Bakterien. Von den sechs bekannten Spezies der Gattung Listeria ist Listeria monocytogenes als Human- und Tierpathogen besonders hervorzuheben; L. ivanovii ist nur tierpathogen, während L. innocua, L. seeligeri, L. grayi und L. welshimeri als unbedenkliche Umweltbakterien gelten. Folglich schreibt das Lebensmittelgesetz in vielen Ländern strenge Beschränkungen für Listeria spp. oder Listeria monocytogenes vor. Bei der Durchführung von Risiko-bezogenen Qualitätskontrollen in Lebensmitteln sollten die Tests für L. monocytogenes und für die Gattung Listeria im Allgemeinen durchgeführt werden. Das Vorhandensein von Listerien – insbesondere von L. innocua – ist ein Indikator für kritische hygienische Bedingungen im Produktionsprozess. Innovative Schnelltests erleichtern das Screening auf pathogene Keime. Das Ein-Schritt-Format reduziert die Möglichkeit von Fehlern bei der Durchführung.

Campylobacteriosis is an infection caused by Campylobacter, most commonly C. jejuni. It produces an inflammatory, sometimes bloody, diarrhea or dysentery, including cramps, fever and abdominal pain. The debilitating neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), as well as reactive arthritis have also been associated with recent infections with certain C. jejuni strains. C. lari and the emerging pathogen, C. upsaliensis, have also been reported in a small percentage of cases of human Campylobacter infection. Campylobacter spp. are highly infectious - as few as 500 bacteria can cause illness. There is an increasing demand for Campylobacter testing in food to meet regulations regarding Campylobacter levels in poultry. The majority of Campylobacter spp. are relatively metabolically inactive, making identification based on biochemical characteristics difficult. Currently, the most commonly used techniques to test food products for Campylobacter are traditional methods based on culture media. Innovative, rapid tests make screening for pathogenic organisms easier. The one-step format reduces the possibility of errors during handling.
