In mikrobiologischen Laboren werden Inkubationsbäder routinemäßig eingesetzt, um spezifische Bedingungen für die Inkubation von Proben zu schaffen, die nicht offener Flamme ausgesetzt werden dürfen. Die Temperatur wird entweder analog oder digital eingestellt, und auch Rühren oder Schütteln sowie weitere Betriebsmechanismen werden gesteuert. Typischerweise wird Wasser verwendet, um die Proben schonend zu erwärmen; Öl und Kügelchen kommen zum Einsatz, wenn höhere Temperaturen oder effizientere Methoden erforderlich sind. Die Bäder sind mit Deckeln ausgestattet, um Wärmeverlust und Kontaminationen von außen zu verhindern.
