Durch Veränderung von Farbe oder Muster zeigen die Sterilisationsindikatoren den Übergang in einen Reinigungszustand oder den Abschluss eines Verfahrens visuell an. Um Verwechslungen oder die bloße Möglichkeit, dass Instrumente nicht steril sind, ausschließen zu können, werden Indikatoren routinemäßig in Kliniken oder Forschungseinrichtungen eingesetzt, in denen der Ausschluss von Kontaminationen von enormer Bedeutung ist. Die Sterilisationsindikatoren mit der für den Reinigungsprozess erforderlichen Temperaturbeständigkeit sind in verschiedenen Formen, wie zum Beispiel Bänder, Ampullen oder Streifen, erhältlich.
