Smart Solutions for a Sustainable Future

At Avantor, we aim to customize sustainable solutions to meet customers’ needs by focusing on innovation and new product development. As a result, in 2023, we expanded our bioproduction offerings, enhanced our proprietary lab research products and enabled our customers to leverage custom cGMP products throughout their development cycles — from early-stage research to scale-up and commercialization.

Avantor R&D scientists developed a biodegradable solution used in cell lysis to replace a chemical recently found to be toxic to aquatic organisms when entering environment through waste streams. Our new J.T. Baker^® Cell Lysis Solution and J.T. Baker^® Viral Inactivation Solution are biodegradable and exhibit low ecotoxicity. Both products are easily cleared from drug substance during downstream process and offer product performance comparable to industry standards. Development of these products is an example of our investment in innovations that support a more sustainable future with smart solutions.

We also introduced an enhanced Inventory Manager digital solution, integrating Electronic Lab Notebook and Smart Shelf platforms, which leverage AI and automation to streamline lab procurement. We also accelerated new product introductions from supplier partners that are highly relevant to biologic platforms.

Avantor’s Innovation Centers

Avantor’s 13 Innovation Centers are technology-driven research and collaboration sites where our experts work closely with customers to solve science’s most difficult challenges. Driving both incremental and breakthrough innovations, throughout 2023 work at the centers involved projects that reengineered packaging to minimize waste, improved efficiency in customer processes, and developing biodegradable detergent.

Supporting the Sustainable Lab Movement

Avantor continues to support the sustainable lab movement with our sponsorship of My Green Lab^®, a non-profit organization recognized as a leader for laboratory sustainability best practices around the world. Avantor Services onsite laboratory team members, certified as My Green Lab Ambassadors contribute to these efforts by supporting our customers’ efforts in achieving My Green Lab certification, completing the Freezer Challenge, and advancing sustainable lab practices overall.
